Interview with Sarah Harralson
What is your favorite part about working with Dani Felt?
Since meeting Dani, she's introduced me to people who were able to help my career as well as people I can provide services for. Dani is a great networker and connector, and good things happen when we work together!
Can you tell us about your musical background and how you got started in music?
I am originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, and my Granddad was a huge musical influence of mine as he played accordion in bluegrass and gospel bands, and my mother was musical and encouraged me to take piano lessons. I started writing songs at the age of ten as a form of therapy, and after high school, I moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University and further pursue a music career.
How do you prioritize self-care and mental health while pursuing a career in music?
I believe if you don't take care of yourself, you can't take care of others with the music you are providing them. As an artist, it's important to have a shining stage presence and feel good in your body while delivering your message to others. Making time for meditation, therapy, workouts, and healthy food is essential to a long lasting career as a musician.
What do you hope listeners take away from your music, and how do you engage with them emotionally?
I am a big believer that music heals, so I want people to take what they need from my music whether that's laughter, joy, or even a good cry. I put my own truth and stories into my songs, but also make it universally relatable so that I can connect with others on an emotional level through my music.
What has been the most difficult aspect of pursuing a career in music?
Pursuing an artist career is such a financial struggle if you don't have a label or family member to immediately back you. I think the public needs to realize that there is no glamour in being a starving artist, and the current reality is that many musicians have to hold full time jobs or take other gigs while pursuing their own artistry and dreams.
Can you share any memorable or standout moments from your live performances?
Last August, I was able to sing my song "The Chance" with an international symphony in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. It was a performance I never thought would happen, and I thank Barney Esville for hiring me to sing on "Hello, My Friend" with him, which led to this performance and international tour.
How do you balance the creative aspects of music with the business side of the industry?
It's extremely important in today's world to wear multiple hats in the music industry as an artist, especially as a female. For a musician to get signed or to get opportunities, it's important that they have knowledge of the business side of the industry so they understand what they are getting into in terms of contracts and royalties. It's also important to know about production and to be able to do your own marketing to be a self sufficient artist. Time management is key when you are taking all of this on yourself as an indie artist.
If you could work with any brand what brand would it be and why?
I would love to work with Takamine guitars! I got mine used about 6 years ago, and it's been my favorite stage guitar and I've made so many memories with it. She sounds so good!
Can you share any upcoming projects or releases you're excited about?
I have two non-musical creative projects I just released: The first one is a children's book I just published titled "Turtle Tears", which can be purchased online on Amazon or my website, www.sarahharralson.com/store. The other is a podcast I just launched called, Mind Your Music Business, where I interview different people in the music industry. Stay tuned for some music announcements this year!
