Interview with Marliii

Can you tell us about your musical background and how you got started in music?

Marliii: My family played a significant role in introducing music to my life. My father grew up playing the guitar, so my parents gave me a starter guitar for my 7th birthday, and my dad taught me how to shred for several years. By the time I was 10 years old, I was playing the guitar and singing simultaneously for both covers and original songs. Since then I have learned how to play 10 different instruments, as well as how to produce tracks in my DAW.

How long have you been involved in music, and what motivated you to pursue it professionally?

Marliii: I have been involved with music for 2 decades already, despite always getting ID’d at bars and clubs. The reason I decided to pursue a professional career in music is because I love the human connection that occurs through the emotions we feel when experiencing music, and I love creating and performing so much that I am always overjoyed to contribute to the music community.

What has been the most difficult aspect of pursuing a career in music?

Marliii: For me, the most challenging aspect of pursuing a career in music has been funding operations beyond the industry’s barrier of entry. All performing artists’ official releases compete with algorithms that include celebrities who are backed by major label teams with investments of millions of dollars per single; it can be really tempting to dip into personal savings with hopes that a higher budget will increase visibility, yet it’s important to remember that an effective financial strategy is pivotal to scale (while spending too much in the wrong areas could cause financial debt and burnout).

How do you balance the creative aspects of music with the business side of the industry?

Marliii: I believe that a healthy balance between all the different sides of the industry can be found when leveraging insightful resources in your community. I have a helpful assistant who compliments my efforts with the business side of the industry. I also designate Dani Felt for the management of particular campaigns and projects, and she has also been helpful in drive inspiration if I find myself with any creative blocks.

What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishments or milestones as a musician?

Marliii: My biggest milestones as a musician include touring the East Coast twice (and I am manifesting a West Coast before age 30), being flown out to perform internationally at NOS Alive Portugal, earning a sponsorship from HARMAN JBL to build out my home recording studio, and sharing the stage with Grammy Award winners Portugal. The Man.

How do you celebrate achievements and milestones in your music career?

Marliii: I celebrate achievements in my music career by announcing the milestone to my audience on social media. As a foodie, I will also treat myself to celebratory baked goods. Depending on the level of achievement, I may even plan an appearance such as a fun night out or new show (such as a release party) to share the moment at a more personal level with my friends, family, and fans.

How do you prioritize self-care and mental health while pursuing a career in music?

Marliii: I prioritize self-care and mental health by dedicating time in my routine to relax. I partake in a daily skincare routine and I paint my nails every other week or so. I also plan frequent spa days, now and then at a spa resort, though more often it’s DIY at home. My mental health is at its best when my home is clean and organized, so I proactively tidy up my home and find joy in decorating my space with calming candles and plants.

What is your favorite part about working with Dani Felt?

Marliii: My favorite part about working with Dani Felt is her optimism, as well as her collaborative versatility that drives results for her client network. When I hire Dani for my music projects, she offers diverse industry knowledge and demonstrates talent in referring relevant experts to ensure we achieve success. Additionally, if I find myself stuck with any challenges, Dani will get back to me with immediate solutions. With Dani’s guidance, we have been able to manifest exciting wins for my brand!
